a monkey stole my juicebox
this issue has kraven the hunter posing in a thong on its cover. nothing could've prepared me for this. crazy 80s, huh.

these two crazy kids are finally getting together. took them long enough!
of course, it couldn't be so easy with these two, but that's only natural. they both have their doubts and fears: mj's reluctant to get married in fear that her marriage will turn out the way her mother's and her sister's did, and she'll end up regretting it and paying for this mistake for the rest of her life, and pete's afraid he'll be an inadequate husband to a wealthier and more successful wife, that mj will eventually get bored with him and frustrated with his lack of ambition.
i still think this is going to work for them in the end.

peter has his own frustrations, of course. everything seems to be going wrong for him; black cat's bad luck powers seem to still be affecting him, beyonder and mephisto mess with his life for shits and giggles, he seems to do more damage than good when superheroing these days, he doesn't get any good photos anymore and, therefore, he's broke, his relationship with mj is really confusing... the list could go on and on.
in short, the only thing that keep him from hanging up his webs is the fact that his friend flash needs his help and support, and even about this pete's not sure. maybe flash really is hobgoblin, then why should he help a person who's tried to kill him on many occasions?
while pete's struggling with the hobgoblin mess, kingpin uncharacteristically goes out of town on some personal business (ish 284). nobody's sure where he is or whether he's going to be back at all, and a gang war breaks out, because nature abhors a vacuum. peter's trying to break up as many mob fights as he can, but this shit's going on all over the town, so his efforts are like a drop in the ocean.
naturally, daredevil participates in this whole mess, too, and his opinion is that peter has no idea what's going on and therefore shouldn't interfere. he even resorts to cheap tricks, such as prank calls, to keep spidey away from the main action. of course, pete's unhappy about that.
a panel from the comic.
when kingpin's finally coming back, having finished with his personal business, it means the end of the war, and everyone's happy to welcome with open arms (everyone except peter, that is). ned leeds sums it up pretty neatly in this panel.
daredevil, too, chooses a smaller of two evils and goes as far as cooperating with police force and impersonating kingpin in an attempt to throw any dissatisfied citizens or mobsters off the real kingpin's tail. spidey falls for this and gets further humiliated when he discovers the truth. in matt's defence, he's not all that happy about letting a crime lord back into the city and making a fool of his fellow hero, either.
more details under the cut.

heh, apparently saying 'i don't know where to even start' actually gives you some footing.
in short, flash thompson's life is spinning out of control, he violently breaks up with his girlfriend sha-shan, and all of the while he just can't find where he belongs in this life anymore. he feels like a failure and a has-been, and with good reason.
a panel from the comic.
while in this frustrated state of mind, he publicly insults the hobgoblin, and gets framed and accused for being hobgoblin himself as punishment from the enraged villain. in a few days he's broken out of prison by jack-o-lantern, which doesn't help his cause, of course. flash manages to escape jack and holes up at betty's place for a while, afraid both to get killed by the mobsters if he shows his face on the street and to turn himself in to the police, because they'll surely put him away for good and throw away the key after this stunt. nobody except flash's lawyer and his closest friends (pete, mj and betty) believe his innocence at this point. his life becomes even more miserable after hobloglin attacks him at betty's apartment, which forces him to leave in fear for betty's safety.
flash spends almost a week on the streets, he's starving, dead tired and about to give up. unbeknownst to him and the general public, the real hobgoblin is already dead, but the charges are only lifted off him after he accidentally gets involved and nearly killed in spidey's and jack-o-lantern's (who's wearing hobgoblin's costume as a trophy of sorts) fight.

this ish is like a trip back to the sixties, honestly. dock ock puts together a nuclear reactor out of stolen parts, spidey shows up to thwart his plans (whatever they are), the city almost gets blown up. you know, the usual.
a nice filler issue between the mob war/hobgoblin story arcs and whatever's coming next. i should probably write a post about the aforementioned mob war arc, but it was so intense and action-packed that i wouldn't know where to start.

first of all, this issue has the best cover ever. now i want me a t-shirt like that.
second of all, the story's hilarious. pete, mj and jolly jonah have an adventure together at the local bank, which almost gets robbed, and each one of them has a slightly different story to tell.
this is panel is, of course, from jonah's story, where he gets to be the hero of the day. pete's face just made me lose it.
